Asia Cup 2018: Impact of Missing Virat Kohli in the Tournament

Team India skipper Virat Kohli is rested for upcoming Asia Cup 2018. Kohli’s workload was taken into consideration as he was given the much-needed rest for the Asia Cup.

Thus, Rohit Sharma will hold the captaincy reins for the tournament. Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan will be the vice-captain of the side.

However, at the same time, there would be a big void in the Indian side without Virat Kohli. The Indian skipper is the most prolific performer in all the three forms of the game.

Virat Kohli will be missed in the batting order.

In fact, it is noted in the recent past that the top three Indian batsmen, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli have done the bulk of the scoring. However, the middle order and the lower order, has struggled to deliver the goods.

Meanwhile, India had also rested Virat Kohli in the Nidahas Trophy which was a T20 format. The Men in Blue were able to get through by the skin of their teeth when Dinesh Karthik pulled off a miracle to score 29 runs off just eight balls.

Thus, India can collapse like a house of cards without the services of Virat Kohli. On one side, it was imperative to give Virat Kohli the much-needed break, however, on the other side, it exposes the batting loopholes in the Indian side. Kohli has been super consistent in the limited overs format and there is no doubt that his absence will be felt by the Indian team.

The likes of Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, and KL Rahul will hold the onus in the middle order. Therefore, there would be inexperience in the batting line-up. Consequently, these batsmen will like to bat responsibly and make their case stronger for the next year World Cup.

Furthermore, it would be pivotal for Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to provide a good start to the team. Ergo, a solid start can help settle the Indian middle order.

The number four position would also be under the scanner and it would be interesting to note who wins in the chit system adopted by Indian team management.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma will look to lead with aplomb in the absence of the full-time skipper. Rohit has done a fine job whenever Kohli has been rested.
