Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya might get the much-needed rest for the Asia Cup 2018. The current Indian Test openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan are also in contention to be rested for the upcoming tournament.
Furthermore, Jasprit Bumrah who returned from the hand injury can be rested as well. Thus, if Virat Kohli will be rested, Indian limited overs deputy Rohit Sharma will hold the captaincy reins.
The Indian players have been playing continuously.
The All-India selection committee will announce the Asia Cup squad today in Mumbai. Asia Cup 2018 will begin from 15 September, only four days after the completion of the ongoing England tour. Consequently, the heavy workload of the players is under the scanner.
In fact, the Indian cricket team has always had a hectic schedule. After the end of the Asia Cup, they will straightway host the Windies. Virat Kohli men have been on a long tour of England and the players deserve a break in between.
“We know that our players have been on the road for a long time, and need some rest. But who gets a break is a question that depends on the workload of an individual player, and the fitness reports of the physio,” a source in the BCCI told TOI on the eve of the selection of Asia Cup.
The Asia Cup squad will be announced today.
Meanwhile, the Indian team management has paid special importance to the fitness of the players. Therefore, it is imperative to give their body some time off to regain their 100% battery. You can’t expect players to play like machines and it is pivotal to give the adequate rest at the right time.
In fact, we all know Virat Kohli maintains a high level of fitness and would not like to miss out on the action. Thus, former Australian batsman Dean Jones recently made a remark on the Indian skipper’s hunger to play.
“As much as I know Kohli, he’d be willing to play even on one leg,” former Australian batsman Dean Jones said.
Subsequently, it would be interesting to note the changes in the Indian team. The performance of the recently concluded Quadrangular series will be taken into consideration. Thus, Manish Pandey and Mayank Agarwal might get a place in the side.
