Asia Cup Special: India’s Combined XI of the Tournament

With six wins in the 13 editions of Asia Cup, India is the most successful side in the tournament folklore. Thus, it is obvious that a combined XI of the Indian team will make a potent side.

India won the inaugural edition of 1984. In fact, the Indian team is the current defending champions of the Asia Cup. Thus, Virat Kohli will look to defend their title in the upcoming tournament. The 14 edition of the Asia Cup will take place in the UAE. The tournament will begin from 15 September and the final will take place on 30 September.

Meanwhile, Indian players have produced some outstanding performances in the Asia Cup. They have dominated the tournament as India is the most successful side in the competition.

Thus, we take a look at India’s Combined XI of the tournament since the inception of Asia Cup.

Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag batted in his own way in Asia Cup. The attacking opener scored his runs at a blistering strike rate of 113.87. The combative right-hander scored a total of 509 runs in the 13 matches he played in the Asia Cup.

Sehwag scored one century and three fifties while playing in the tournament. Thus, he opens the batting for us. Furthermore, Sehwag was able to take 12 scalps in the Asia Cup.

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar has dominated most of the tournaments he has played and Asia Cup is no exception. The Master Blaster is the third highest run-scorer with 971 runs in 21 innings.

Sachin scored two hundred and seven fifties at an impressive average of 51.10. The legendary batsman had the highest score of 114 in the tournament. Furthermore, Sachin took 17 wickets in the tourney.

It is a potent Indian middle order.

Virat Kohli

The current Indian skipper Virat Kohli is hot on the heels of Sachin Tendulkar as he is the fourth highest run-getter in Asia Cup. Kohli has gathered 766 runs at an average of 63.83 in the 14 innings he has played.

Kohli is the most consistent batsman in the white ball version and has continued to blow his trumpet in Asia Cup. The Indian skipper had played a fine knock of 49 in the previous edition when he rescued India from troubled waters against arch-rivals Pakistan.

Kohli has scored three centuries and two fifties in the Asia Cup thus far.

Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly will have to bat out of position in India’s Combined XI team. However, Ganguly is used to it as he had done the same in his career.

The southpaw batsman had amassed 518 runs in the 12 innings he played in Asia Cup. Ganguly scored four half-centuries and one hundred in the tournament.

Mohammad Azharuddin

Mohammad Azharuddin scored 468 runs in 13 innings of Asia Cup at an impressive average of 58.50. The stylish right-hander scored four fifties in the tournament.

Furthermore, Azharuddin was unbeaten on five occasions which goes to show that he had closed the game on the high for India. The former skipper best was unbeaten 90 and he struck his runs at a strike rate of 83.

Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina has impressed with his attacking strokeplay in the Asia Cup. The southpaw batsman scored 586 runs at a fine average of 48. Furthermore, he scored his runs at a brisk strike rate of 112.

Furthermore, Raina is a live wire on the field and can chip with some overs.

Dhoni has an impressive record in Asia Cup.

The former Indian skipper MS Dhoni has scored 613 runs in the Asia Cup in 16 innings. The Talisman has the best average of 102.16 in the Asia Cup.

Dhoni has remained unconquered on 10 occasions which goes to show his consistency. Thus, as usual, he has finished off the games for India. MS Dhoni will lead this India’s Combined XI team.

Kapil Dev

India’s greatest ever all-rounder took 15 wickets in the seven matches in the competition. He had the best bowling figures of four for 31 runs. The right-handed pacer gave his runs at an economy of 3.56.

In fact, Kapil Dev bowled at an impressive average of 13. Kapil Dev also led India to the triumph in the inaugural edition.

Ravichandran Ashwin

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin has an impressive record while playing in the Asia Cup. The linchpin off-spinner has scalped 14 wickets in the seven matches.

The Tamil Nadu spinner has bowled at an average of 22.71 and economy of 4.63 in the tournament. Furthermore, Ashwin can chip in with the bat.

Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan is the most successful Indian bowler in Asia Cup.

Irfan Pathan is the leading Indian wicket-taker in the Asia Cup. The southpaw medium pacer has scalped 22 wickets in the 12 matches of the tournament. Pathan best bowling figures in the tournament are four for 32.

The all-rounder bowled with an average 27.50. Moreover, Pathan had the ability to contribute with the bat while batting down the order.

Zaheer Khan

Zaheer Khan was one of the most impressive Indian fast bowlers of his generation. The left-handed fast bowler scalped nine wickets in the eight matches of the competition.

Meanwhile, Zaheer Khan doesn’t have the most impressive record in the tournament. However, he would come in handy with his experience in India’s Combined XI.
