Assam Appoints Lalchand Rajput as Head Coach ahead of Ranji Season

Former India player Lalchand Rajput has been roped in by Assam as the head coach for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season.

The 55-year old will replace former India spinner Sunil Joshi, who coached the team last year, before being appointed as the spin consultant by Bangladesh last month.

Rajput, who had applied for Team India’s head coach post in the last two years, was the head coach of Afghanistan since 2016 after he lost out in the race to become India coach. However, his stint with Afghanistan Cricket came to an end earlier this year when Afghanistan Cricket Board ended his contract after he refused to travel to Kabul to train the team.

Rajput expressed his delight over getting the role from the team where he plied his trade both as a player and as a coach.

“I’m passionate about coaching, and it’s a great opportunity to coach the Ranji team of a state association which I’ve known for years earlier–I’ve played three years as a professional for Assam and also coached the Ranji team later. I know the people around there,” Rajput told The Times of India on Monday.

“I’ll be passing on all my coaching experience and knowledge over the last two decades to these players so that it makes a difference in their cricketing performance. I’m really looking forward to working with the promising youngsters that they have,” he added.

Rajput is one of the most experienced coaches in India. The ex-cricketer, who had represented India in two Tests and four ODIs, was with the Indian team when it won the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007 and the CB tri-series title in early 2008 in Australia. He also coached India A for five years.

Meanwhile, Rajput will have his task cut out when he starts his coaching stint with Assam. The north-eastern state was relegated to the plate group last season and now face an upheaval task of qualifying from the knockouts after being grouped with the likes of Delhi, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Railways and Uttar Pradesh in Group A for the upcoming season.
