Australia recently defeated India by 34 runs in the Sydney ODI, and Michael Vaughan was quick to react to it. The former England captain suggested the inclusion of Rishabh Pant in the ODI team; even if as a batsman only. Knowing two of India’s squad members, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya, are suspended, and not available for selection; the management could bring in the replacements, and Pant could be one of them.
Get Pant in the ODI team – Michael Vaughan
Vaughan, even in the past, has been vocal about his opinions; be it for England cricket or anyone. Now, during the SCG ODI, he came up with a tweet suggesting a change. He says the inclusion of Rishabh Pant has become necessary, looking at the bleak image of India’s middle-order.

Australia takes an early lead in the ODI series
Jhye Richardson’s four-wicket haul meant India would go down fighting in the first match. Though Rohit Sharma slammed his 22nd ODI hundred, India lost the game by 34 runs. Meanwhile, what prompted Vaughan to come up with the tweet was the way India’s middle-order batted. India, at one stage, got reduced to 4/3 with Virat Kohli, Ambati Rayudu and Shikhar Dhawan all back to the pavilion.
However, MS Dhoni did offer some help with his fighting 96-ball 51, but it was enough. Dinesh Karthik and Ravindra Jadeja, the lower-order batsmen, didn’t score many runs too; putting all the pressure on Rohit’s shoulders. As a result, the pressure only mounted and India lost the game.
Pant waiting in the wings
Rishabh Pant, who was the second-highest run-scorer for India in Australia Tests, didn’t get picked for the ODI’s. In the Tests, the youngster hit his second hundred, an unbeaten 159 at the SCG; earning praises across the world. Meanwhile, looking at the 2019 World Cup, the India National Cricket Team will seek match-winners, in their quest to win the mega event for the third time.
