Australia vs Pakistan 2016/17: We Haven’t Batted Quite Well, Says Darren Lehmann

Australia were brought back to reality in a pinching defeat at the MCG on Sunday, as a fine bowling performance from Pakistan restricted them to a below par total. Despite a few expected glitches within the run-chase, Pakistan eventually got home to register their first ever victory against the Kangaroos in Australia after an agonizing span of 12 years.

The first ODI at The Gabba bore a similar outlook for Australia’s batting, other than obviously the fact that they comprehensively won the encounter. In that game, the hosts were reduced to 78-5, before Glenn Maxwell and Mathew Wade got them back on track. Ahead of the third ODI at Perth, coach Darren Lehmann admitted that he wasn’t too pleased with Australia’s batting in the series till now.

“We batted really well against New Zealand, haven’t batted so well here,” said Lehmann. “Good challenge for the young group.” “Obviously, (we want to) learn from our mistakes. We got saved by Matthew Wade in Brisbane. If the top four, top five can do the bulk of the batting in this game then that would be good.”

When quizzed about flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell’s decision to only attend practice occasionally, Lehmann said:

“Maxwell likes to go through a similar routine. Guys have been going five months on the bounce, nice to give them a day off occasionally,” Lehmann said. “We’ve played a lot of cricket over the last four or five months and have a lot of cricket the next few months.”

Backing uncapped batsman Peter Handscomb to excel on debut, Lehmann said:

“Handscomb played a good one-day type innings in Sydney. He’s got all the shots and is innovative,” he said. “If we lose early wickets, he can consolidate from there.”He’s done really well so this is a good reward for a good summer,” he said. “Obviously we want four quality batters at the top so he’ll get his chance there.”
