Why Australians struggle in Asia?

In the recently concluded 2nd Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, the Australian batsmen were not able to cope with Sri Lankan spinners. The trio of Sandakan, Dilwuran Perera, and Rangana Herath made the Australian dance to their tunes. In the first innings, Ragana Herath, Dilwuran Perera were the main wicket takers who picked 4 wickets each while Sandakan picked 1 wicket. Sandakan bowled only 2 balls in the first innings.

In the second innings, again the spinners troubled the Australian batsmen. Diluwran Perera bowled with great control. He picked 6 wickets in the second innings while Ragana Herath picked 2 and Sandakan picked 1 wicket. It was total domination by the Sri Lankan spinners. The Australian spinners were not able to control the run flow. Lyon and Holland picked 6 wickets in the 2 innings they bowled in the second test match.

In the first test match of the series, Rangana Hearth and debutant Sandakan picked 4 wickets each to restrict Australia to 203 after being bowled out for 117 in the first innings. In the second innings chasing 268, Hearth was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka picking 5 wickets. Sandakan picked 3, Perera 1 and Silva one to help Sri Lanka register one of their greatest win in test cricket. Steve Smith was the top scorer with 55 in the second innings

The technique of the Australian batsmen against spinners in Australia has been found wanting. In the second test match against Sri Lanka, the top scorer in both innings was David Warner who played aggressively scoring 42 and 41.

In the previous 3 test series in Asia, the Australian cricket team lost 0-4 to India in 2013,0-2 against Pakistan in 2014  and currently trailing 0-2 in the test series against Sri Lanka.

In the 2013 test series against India in India, Micheal Clarke was the captain of the team. In that series Jadeja, Ashwin were the best bowlers on show. Ashwin was the man of the series who picked 29 wickets in 4 match test series. Ravindra Jadeja also picked 23 wickets in that series also which helped India to whitewash Australia 4-0.

In the 2014 test series against Pakistan in UAE, the Australian batsmen failed to cope against spinners. Yasir Shah and Babar were the pick of the bowlers in that series. There were contributions from Australian batsmen but none of them made big scores.Australia lost that series to 0-2.

In the ongoing test series against Sri Lanka, the Australian team have struggled in the 2 test matches so far. They have made 203, 161 in the first test match. In the second test match, Australia were bowled out for 106 and 183 which shows the lack of confidence of Australian batsmen in Asia.
