‘Ban the fixers,’ says Stuart Broad of England

The England fast bowler Stuart Broad in an interview with The Mail on Sunday has strongly recommended a life ban for the fixers but also mentions that he has “no hard feelings” against fast bowler Mohammad Amir. He was mainly annoyed by the fact that match-fixing scandal took place at Home of cricket Lords ground.
“Of course, it annoys me that game will always be connected with what went on. Lord’s is the home of cricket. It’s a wonderful place to play and that Test match will always be remembered for the wrong reasons,” Broad told the Mail on Sunday.

“It was my best-ever innings, my only Test century and coming in tough circumstances as well. It was a good battle and I’ll never forget the feeling I got running through for that hundred.
“From what we know, the three Pakistan players weren’t actually fixing the game as a whole — a no-ball doesn’t affect if I hit a four or not — so I can still look back with a lot of pride on scoring that hundred. But of course, it was tarnished by what happened.”

It was a black day for cricket as in the fourth Test at Lords, following the instructions of captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif bowled no-balls for money. All the three players were banned from the immediate effect. Mohammad Amir has already made a comeback to the international circuit after a serving the ban of five years. Both Asif and Butt have returned to the domestic circuit.

Broad dismisses any hard feelings playing against Mohammad Amir and adding to the comments accepts that Amir was quite young at that time and was influenced by a senior member of the team.

“In Amir’s case I certainly have no hard feelings about playing against him again,” said Broad. What he did was wrong but he was extremely young and maybe not aware of the consequences. The reality is he’s back in the game and has served his time.
“I have a little bit of sympathy for Amir but once you’ve received money to do something illegal that is always a bad thing. We are very well-educated by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit, but at 18 years old you are potentially more vulnerable and susceptible to your elders.
“I am strongly of the view that one of the only ways we will ever expel this awful (match-fixing) disease from our game is to hand out lifetime bans for any kind of fixing.

“As an 18-year-old if you know the punishment is a lifetime ban from anything to do with cricket — playing, coaching, anything — that should be it. It would be a very scary thought” said Broad.

Broad emerged as the hero of the Lords test as at one stage England team was struggling 102/7 when Broad came into bat. He along with Jonathan Trott drove the team from 102/7 to 434/8 which was the game for the England team. Broad scored 169 runs in a tough position and also registered his name on the Lords honour boards. Pakistan lost the match by an innings and 225 runs.

Pakistan lost the Test series by a margin of 3-1. The visitors also lost the T20I series and ODI series that followed by a margin of 2-0 and 3-2 respectively.
