BBL’s most consistent team Perth Scorchers defeated Melbourne Stars by 18 runs in the second Semi-Finals of the 2014-15 edition and booked a flight ticket to Canberra where they will face Sydney Sixers in the Finals on January 28.
Chasing 145 to win, Melbourne Stars were never in contention as they started cautiously as they scored only 38 runs in the first six overs. Skipper Cameron White was the first to go when he was caught behind off Yasir Arafat for a 24 ball 13 before Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright seemed to take the Stars home. Stars’ middle order collapsed as Luke Wright, Paul Handscomb and Rob Quiney were dismissed in quick succession and that piled the pressure on Kevin Pietersen to go for quick runs and eventually he too was dismissed in the fifteenth over with more than 50 runs needed of the last five overs.
Nathan Coulter-Nile, Brad Hogg and Andrew Tye bowled brilliantly in the middle overs that won the game for the hosts. Tye dismissed Clint McKay and John Hastings in the same over and Yasir Arafat finished off the innings in the last over of the match. Tye was the best bowler for Scorchers with figures of 4-18 for which he was named the Man of the Match.
Earlier Choosing to bat, Perth Scorchers put on just 144 runs on the board courtesy Michael Carberry’s 36 ball 50 and a 9 ball 22 from Nathan Coulter-Nile’s late charge of 9 ball 22. Wickets at regular intervals dented Scorchers’ scoring rate. John Hastings was the pick of the Melbourne Stars’ bowlers with figures of 3-27.
