Glenn Maxwell’s swashbuckling 44 ball 66 just a day before Australia’s team selection for the 2015 World Cup has earned himself a place in the 15 member Aussie squad and also led his side to a three wicket victory over their city rivals Melbourne Renegades in a match that had plenty of twists at the MCG. This is Melbourne Stars’ second victory in the Melbourne derby in one week’s time.

Chasing 154 to victory from 20 overs, Stars got off to a shaky start as they lost the wickets of openers Luke Wright and Cameron White at the end of the second over of the innings. Maxwell joined Pietersen in the middle and the duo batted with an elegance in their unorthodox style. They smashed the bowlers all around the park and were threatening to take their side home with a 110 run partnership in 13 overs. Maxwell reached his fifty before he was castled by Fawad Ahmed for 66 which included 2 fours and 4 sixes.

Pietersen was dismissed soon for a run a ball 49 and the stars 10 runs from 11 balls. James Faulkner followed KP in the very next ball as the Stars managed to score 4 runs off that over with six needed off the final one. With Stars needed 3 runs to three balls, Alex Keath got out while running the third run. With scores levelled with two balls to spare, Nathan Rimmington ran John Hastings out. It all came down to the wire as Stars needed 1 run off Rimmington’s final ball of the innings. Tom Triffitt managed to get his bat on ball which reached Callum Ferguson who was standing just besides the non-striker.

He managed to collect the ball and threw the ball and broke the stumps when the Triffitt was short of his crease by inches. When the umpire referred it to the third umpire, the replays showed that Rimmington’s foot broke the stumps when the ball was just a centimetre away from the stumps. The third umpire took a long time to rule it Not-Out which brought some joy to the Stars’ dugout following the tense finish. Shakib Al Hasan was the pick of the Renegades bowlers with figures of 1-23 in 4 overs.

Earlier choosing to bat, the Renegades put on 153-6 in their 20 overs Courtesy Matthew Wade’s 49 ball 71. Faulkner was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-11. Maxwell was declared the man of the match.

Brief Scores: Renegades 153-6 (Wade 71, Tom Beaton 34, Faulkner 3-11) lost to Stars 154-7 (Maxwell 66, Pietersen 49, Shakib 1-23)
