BCCI Has Done Very Well In ICC’s Annual Conference – Vinod Rai

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) finally reached an agreement on a new finance model this week after the governing body of the game agreed to pay the Indian board US$112 million more than what was agreed upon by the majority of the boards earlier this year.

Under the new model approved by the apex body on Thursday (June 22) during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in London, the BCCI will now receive US$405 million instead of $293 million that was agreed in the original model. The ICC had voted 13-1 in favour of India being allocated $293 million in April only to see the BCCI vehemently opposing it. The new revenue model had even led to reports that India were planning to boycott the Champions Trophy. In fact, India had also missed the deadline to name a squad for the tournament.

But fortunately, the team was later announced and the whole episode has ended now, leaving the BCCI with a smiling face. India is now getting US$ 266 million more than England, which will take home US$ 139 million. Australia, Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are getting US$ 128 million each. Zimbabwe will get US$ 94 million.

Reflecting on the successful negotiation in the meeting, Vinod Rai, head of the Committee of Administrators (CoA), said that BCCI proved everyone wrong by doing ‘very well’ in the meeting.

“BCCI have done very well over there. All of you had written us off at ICC in the sense that the BCCI had lost its leverage, etc. I have maintained all along that we should not be chasing 40 or 50 million dollars per annum. People have reported wrongly that it’s 293 million dollars per annum. Today, it’s 405 million dollars over eight years,” he said.

Rai further said that most of BCCI’s suggestions regarding ICC’s new governance model have been taken into consideration. The ICC, meanwhile, has decided to form a new Governance Committee, with India heading it. The BCCI was also incorporated in the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee.

“In the governance model, a lot of our suggestions have been accepted. And two groups have been formed, one of which is headed by Mr. (Anirudh) Chaudhary. The other group in which Rahul Johri is there is the strategic working group and the governance model group,” he said.

“The best thing that has happened for us is the ICC accepting that the governance document is a living document, which means it is a dynamic document. And this governance working group is going to make suggestions in case some changes need to be brought up. I think that’s a very major achievement,” he added.
