India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been issued a show-cause notice by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after he was spotted in Trinbago Knight Riders’ dressing room during the opening game of Caribbean Premier League.
Karthik is the captain of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, the sister franchise of Trinbago Knight Riders. Brendon McCullum is the head coach of both the teams. A few tweets on social media went viral where Karthik was seen sitting with McCullum.

The BCCI took a note of it and has given two weeks time to Karthik to respond. “Yes, Dinesh Karthik has been issued a show-cause notice by the BCCI. We have received photographs where Karthik is seen in the dressing room of Trinbago Knight Riders. BCCI CEO Rahul Johri has issued a show-cause notice asking him to explain why his central contract shouldn’t be annulled,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.
As per the rules, no Indian player is allowed to play any T20 league. Dinesh Karthik, of course, was just sitting with the team management and watching the match. He is likely to escape any punishment as he didn’t take part in the match.
Although the BCCI’s notice to Karthik is a clear signal that the Indian players are not allowed to even attend those matches in an official capacity.
The experienced campaigner will soon be turning up for Tamil Nadu in the Vijay Hazare Trophy that starts on September 24. Karthik was named as the captain of the team. At 34, he can still make a comeback if he does well in domestic cricket.
Karthik had made his comeback in 2017 for ICC Champions Trophy, replacing an injured Manish Pandey. He retained his place till World Cup and was preferred over Risabh Pant for a place in the team.
During the tournament, Karthik scored 14 runs in three matches and was dropped as soon as the tournament got over.

While Rishabh Pant will be the go-to man for India across formats, Karthik can still make a comeback in the limited-overs format given there is a no backup for Rishabh in white-ball cricket.
In the longest format, the comeback of Wriddhiman Saha and performances from KS Bharat will keep Karthik out of the Test side.
