Indian Test squad for the Sri Lankan tour was announced today. Chief selector Sandip Patil claimed that the squad is very much well balanced. He said, “Our job is to back talent. This is a well balanced squad.”
When asked why leggie Amit Mishra was chosen over amother spinner Pragyan Ojha, he said, “Pragyan Ojha was discussed, but looking at SL wickets we opted for a legspinner in Amit Mishra.”
On the question why Wriddhiman Saha was retained in the Test squad, Patil said, “ We’ve backed Saha based on domestic performance. He’s the right option at this stage. He sets good balance.”
Speaking on comeback man Harbhajan Singh, Patil said, “Very happy with Harbhajan’s comeback. Mishra was always in scheme of things. Selection job is to provide captain/coach with best team.”
He also mentioned that spinner Karn Sharma and pacer Mohammad Shami were not considered for the upcoming tour as they were still recovering from their injuries.
“Karn not recovered from injury, as is Shami, so not considered. We try to get balance. This is best possible team for SL.”
Laying concern on the topic why players are getting repeated injuries, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said, “We also discussed fitness of players. BCCI very keen on standard of fitness. NCA will play a big role in India and India A squads.”
