BCCI Requests Cricket South Africa To Extend The Availability of Their Players

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed confidence that Cricket South Africa (CSA)  would allow its players to stay in the IPL for an extended period of time. The BCCI has been on the bargaining mode after CSA initially announced that it would allow its players only up to May 7. The Indian Board has urged its counterparts to extend the date up to May 15 after the end of the league stages. The sources within the franchises are yet to hear any confirmation from Cricket Centre or from Johannesburg.

“We’re waiting to hear from the BCCI about it,” said a franchise official.

The IPL kicked off today in a glamorous way with Royal Challengers Bangalore and defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad locking horns at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium, Uppal. However, despite the tournament having already started, there has been no confirmation about the duration for which the South African players will be available in the tournament.

“The IPL is all set, the only problem is about the South Africans’ availability. We’ve not had a word from them. We’re still waiting to hear from them. Rajeev Shukla, IPL chairman, and Rahul Johri, the CEO, are talking to the CSA over this,” said a top BCCI member. Shukla and Johri could not be reached.

South Africa’ hesitance comes from the fact that it wants its players to be fresh before the tour to England starts, which is been seen as a preparation for the Champions Trophy which is the next big cricketing event after the culmination of IPL.

The Proteas are scheduled to play the first game at Leeds on May 24. The BCCI contends that there is enough time before their first England game and they can be made available till the league stage. This point apparently was raised during the meeting BCCI officials had with CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat.

Top South African players featuring in the IPL are AB de Villiers (RCB), David Miller (KXIP), Faf du Plessis and Imran Tahir (PSG) and Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris (DD). These names are highly important parts of their respective IPL teams and an unclear position over the availability of these players is bound to create problem tactical problems for the teams.

Also, their departure during the final few matches of the league stages, a time when the fight for the places in the knockouts would be extreme, can be a huge blow for teams. Moreover, it will also likely take off the sheen from this season as the injury issues have already caused enough harm to the franchises.
