England’s star all-rounder Ben Stokes, who is currently playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, has credited Kevin Pietersen for taking a stand and paving the way for England players to get the best platform to evolve.
Among England players, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes have been the pivotal players for their respective franchise in the IPL 2020, currently being played in the UAE. All of them have given an outstanding performance.
Ben Stokes stated that the former England captain, Pietersen, had not stood out to put his opinion openly to play in the IPL the current England players, including himself, would not have got the opportunity to feature in the most competitive league.
‘‘Before Jos and me, it goes further back to Kevin Pietersen’s playing days…it was him who paved the way for England players.
“It was a very sensitive subject at that time because of the English contract system and he was very vocal about it. If he hadn’t voiced his opinions, then we wouldn’t have seen so many English players here,” Ben Stokes told Gulf News.
Ben Stokes on the importance of IPL 2020:
Stokes further added that even though a player is not regular in IPL, they get to learn from the greatest cricket brain while only sharing the platform with them.
‘‘Even if one is not playing, the training and the sheer experience of spending time with greats of the T20 game for over months makes it a worthwhile exercise,’’ he said.
England allrounder didn’t have a good start to the tournament after missing the first couple of matches. But he found his form back in the last match against Mumbai Indians, scoring his maiden IPL century of this season.
