BPL Outfit Barisal Bulls Excluded From Fifth Edition Of 2017 T20

In what could be termed as a huge setback for the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at the first instance and its franchise Barisal Bulls’ fans in general, as the franchise and 2015 runners-up has been ousted to miss out the fifth edition of the Twenty20 competition after failing to meet the financial terms under the Board’s constitution.

The BPL chairman Afzalur Rahman Sinha revealed to the local media in Bangladesh after ousting the last year’s wooden spoon outfit Bulls has failed to comply with financial terms under the rules regulations of the cricket board’s governing body, as the cricket carnival is expected to delight the fans in yet another season.

“We have discussed and took decision about lots of things. Barisal Bulls didn’t meet financial terms & conditions,” Rahman briefed Bangladesh media.

On the other side, the secretary of the BPL governing body committee’s member-secretary IH Mallick reiterated the body has taken rest of the decisions before reaching the conclusion of showing an exit to Bulls after the outfit showed a cold shoulder according to a Board.

The reports suggested that governing committee in a meeting reached the decision after Bulls management failed twice to respond for their participation in the impending home season.

“We had extended the deadline twice for them, and both times they failed to comply,” Mallick added.

It’s pertinent to mention the competition is supervised and run by Bangladesh Cricket Board and the upcoming edition will be held in November.

Interestingly, the Bulls franchise is MA Awwal Chowdhury, who’s the director of BCB and co-owned by Axiom Technologies.

Earlier, it was expected the fifth edition would witness eight teams as the competition is slated for November 2.

In the fourth edition last year, BPL has also featured seven teams in the domestic leg of the short-paced tournament.

As the speculations were doing rounds that Bulls would nominate the fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman as its icon player, but they further failed to frame the squad owing to the lack of planning in the administration, reportedly willing to take part in the professional league.

“Mustafiz will not play as an Icon Player. We have been considering whether we can include his name in the players’ draft,” a member secretary of BPL governing council Ismail Haider maintained.

Earlier, Sylhet Surma Sixers joined in as the eighth team under the fresh ownership and a new name which was known as Sylhet Superstars in the past.

Moreover, the players’ draft has been scheduled for September 16.
