The Ashes 2017-18: Broad urges England to accept the challenges of an Ashes tour

The frontman in the English pace bowling line-up, who is otherwise calm and composed, got a determined tone as he stressed how important it would be to get strong and uncompromised start to retain the Ashes urn. The experienced cricketer knows better than anybody that this rivalry is far more than what happens on the pitch.

“Forget about Perth; forget about Melbourne, if we get off and running in Brisbane at the Gabba that will set up our tour, “he was heard saying to Sky Sports.

.

When the Aussies defeated England 5-0 courtesy some magical spells by the left-handed Mitchell Johnson, the last time they were here, Broad had an unusual ally that helped him to be calm while dealing with the Australian fans. Broad was on the radar of the Australian fans as they engaged n verbal war with the England in the one-sided encounter. On recalling the memories, the cricketer recalled that the abuses that are spurred by the fans are not personal and you have to take that with a smile on your face.

Stuart Broad celebrates a wicket.
“I was fortunate that last time we were there, I’d just read Alex Ferguson’s autobiography and he said that when Patrick Vieira came to Old Trafford, they booed him and abused him but that was a sign of respect for the player. Whether that is what the Australians were doing for me, I’m not sure, but I took it that way so it was a lot easier for me to deal with. I felt I actually had a really great rapport with the Australian public towards the end,” the 31-year-old cricketer added.

Praising the fans in Australia, Broad added that the thing about Australians and their sport is that they are very desperate to win, but they know how to respect others if someone plays the game with heart and passion as well as skill.

“That is always how I’ve tried to play my cricket, so that’s why I was able to smile and laugh with the Australian public,” he further mentioned.

David Warner has already made a statement for his promise of hatred and war against the touring England side, while Cummins has warned the England’s tail that they will be targeted with bouncers. However, England’s Chris Woakes has questioned the durability of Australia’s pace-attack and whether they any back-up. Broad, who has been through all these before, feels that this England team can accept the hype and concentrate on the on-field results.

“It is a pretty fearless group that we are taking over and some awesome players who play a type of cricket that will suit Australian conditions, in my opinion. It was brilliant this summer to take momentum into the winter, winning two series with some performances that were very strong throughout. Beating South Africa at home for the first time since 1998 shouldn’t be underestimated,” a confident Broad said.

Talking about his team chances of retaining the trophy, Broad said that all the players are performing nicely, but in Australia, it is about character.

“It’s a tour one has to enjoy and don’t lock yourself in a room and get scared of anything. One has to relax and play good cricket that’s what matters, the cricketer added.”

Broad further mentioned that with age, he has left judging performances by wickets and how many chances he has created.

“Yeah, unfortunately, some of those went down, and it didn’t quite work for me. Ben Stokes and Rooty came up to me as we were walking off at Lord’s and said ‘it has been a bit of an unlucky summer for you, but hopefully you’re saving your wickets up for Australia,” the cricketer signed off.
