Riding on the superb hundred by captain Eoin Morgan, England reached to 234 in the first match of the Carlton Mid-ODI tri-series at SCG.
After electing to bat, England got off to a worst possible start as they lost opener Ian Bell and number three James Taylor on the first three balls of the first over of Mitchell Starc. Joe Root and Moeen Ali also got out cheaply leaving England reeling at 33/4 in 9 overs. Morgan and Ravi Bopara then put on 36 runs for the fifth wicket but in the anxiety to up the scoring rate, Bopara lost his wicket to offie Xavier Doherty.
Morgan then got a good support from wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler as the duo shared a partnership of 67 runs, before Buttler got out on the bowling of James Faulkner in the first over of the batting powerplay. Morgan then took the charge and brought up his 7th ODI hundred. He scored 121 before becoming Starc’s third victim. Number eleven batsman Steven Finn’s presence at the crease was shortly ended by Starc, who returned with the figures of 8.5-0-42-4.
Brief Scores: England 234/10 (Morgan 121, Starc 4-42, Faulkner 3-47) vs Australia
