Champions Trophy 2017: 15-Man Probable Squad For Team India

The national selectors will be one of the keenest spectators of the ongoing IPL 10. The ongoing season has already seen a few revelations who have already made it to the promising players’ column in the selection committee’s diary.

Team India’s next big assignment will be the Champions Trophy. The defending champions who won the last edition which was hosted four years ago in 2013 will have pride at stake.

That being said, there are places to be won in the team. The players, who are well-aware of fact that they won’t make the cut based on just functional performances, are doing their best to place their candidature for a place in the 15-man squad which will head to England for the multi-nation tournament.

Here in this analysis, Sportzwiki tries to predict the probable squad that would be touring England in June.

(Criteria: The squad has been picked keeping in mind India’s last two ODI series, a T20I series against England, and the ongoing IPL season.)

Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli

Kohli is set to lead the side and will be the batting mainstay for the team. Although he is yet to fire in the ongoing IPL season, his superhuman-like form in the 2016 season hasn’t faded away yet. Therefore, he will the single most important player in the batting order.

MS Dhoni:

Dhoni, who led the India to the title win in 2013, will make his appearance as the specialist wicket keeper. At present, Dhoni looks off colour with scores of 12*, 5, 11, 5, 28 in the five games he has played so far for his franchise Rising Pune. However, this doesn’t seem to be worrying at all as Dhoni promises to get back in rhythm.

Ajinkya Rahane:

The star right-hander will be the calm guy handling the pressure situations. Although his ODI form and the current stint with RPS in the IPL looks ordinary, it will be difficult a player of his calibre out of the squad.  He is a must have in the middle order.

Rohit Sharma:

Opening

Rohit Sharma, who is currently leading the Mumbai Indians, has recovered from the injury and has regained his form as well with a match-winning knock against Gujarat Lions recently. If he maintains the same form, he would become a natural selection based on his ODI reputation.

Hardik Pandya:

Hardik Pandya

He faced a bit of dull time last year after a stellar rise at the international level. But, he has found his rhythm since then has emerged as the new finisher in the team. His heroics for the MI this season in the middle order have been simply amazing.

Kedar Jadhav:

Kedar Jadhav

Kedar Jadhav will be a handy man in the lower middle order, providing his pinch hitting services to add crucial runs towards the end of the innings. Jadhav was a regular selection in the home series against New Zealand and England. Kohli has trusted him in the RCB team. He has responded with positive results as well.

Manish Pandey:

Manish Pandey.

Manish Pandey is currently the third highest runs getter in the IPL. If he continues to play in such manner, his IPL number will surely overshadow the below par performances in the series against New Zealand (his last ODI series) and gain a place in the squad.

Ravindra Jadeja:

Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja was the top wicket-taker for India in the last edition and played a huge role in the win. The left arm spinner is now more skilled and holds the top spot in the Test ranking. He will be the first choice spinner in most of the games along with his spinning partner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ravichandran Ashwin:

When Ravichandran Ashwin spun batters

Ravichandran Ashwin is another player who has his place cemented in the squad. The off-spinner will face challenging time on the English wickets but all his experience will come handy during those times. India will hugely rely on him.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar:

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is bowling like the bowler from the Golden Era of fast bowlers in the 70’s and 80’s. This might sound as a bad metaphor as Bhuvi isn’t one of those intimidating bowlers who were tall and fast. But, as far as effectiveness and wicket taking ability are concerned, the comparison doesn’t seem wrong at all. He will be lethal with the old as well as the new ball.

Umesh Yadav:

Bowlers

Umesh Yadav will be the pace spearhead in the team. At the present, he is the best bowler in the country and has delivered highly impressive result across all three format. Therefore, he has his ticket to England already booked.

Jasprit Bumrah:

Bumrah, the Yorker specialist will be key to India’s success. He can easily be counted among the world’s best death overs bowler and will be a huge threat to the opposition when bowling in tandem with Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Nitish Rana:

Nitish Rana has been the latest sensation to emerge from the IPL. The stylish left-hander has already played a couple of matches winning knocks. With 193 runs in 5 matches at a strike rate of 133.10 including two 50’s, Rana surely has grabbed all the eyeballs. It won’t be a surprise if he gets picked to play in England.

Yuvraj Singh:

Team India’s finisher makes our squad, although there are doubts about his fitness with age catching up, solely on his good form against England in the last ODI series where he scored 150 runs. As an Indian fan, I hope Yuvraj has in him one last innings to big goodbye to international cricket on a big stage like Champions Trophy.

Ashish Nehra:

Ashish Nehra.

The old powerhouse proved his worth last season by producing some highly appreciable bowling performances against Australia in Australia and in the World T20. His superb fitness and vast experience will be the key factor that may help him win a place in the squad.

Here is the probable squad:

Virat Kohli (C), MS Dhoni (WK), Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Rana, Yuvraj Singh, Ashish Nehra.
