One of the most followed sports in the Indian sub continent is cricket. Cricket is almost considered as a religion in this part of the world. Cricket boards in this region try and make use of this game to raise charity and funds for the needy in the country.
Sri Lanka Cricket board had scheduled a match between the World XI and the Sri Lankan cricket team on 8th September at the R Premadasa Stadium. The match was scheduled to raise money for the victims of the recent floods in the country and for the patients suffering from chronic kidney disease prevalent in the country. However, this match was postponed to a further undecided date. The reason stated for this decision was the hectic schedule of the team in the recent time.
Sri Lanka have been playing non-stop cricket since May, which includes a tri series in Ireland, Champion’s trophy in England, a home series against Zimbabwe and the ongoing series against India. They are also scheduled to play a T20 series against Pakistan in Pakistan in September. Playing a one off T20 match amidst such a tight schedule would have increased the burden on the players.
The Lankan team is already suffering fitness issues with their players getting injured on a regular basis. So, the Sri Lankan team decided to give a break to the team. The Sri Lankan board had earlier confirmed the participation of cricketers from seven cricket playing nations. The Indian contingent in the team comprised players like Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan and Robin Uthappa who had confirmed their participation. In addition to these players, two former Pakistani captains, Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi had also confirmed their participation for the charity match.
Sri Lanka will try to organize the match as soon as possible to raise funds and help the deceased citizens of the country.
