Amid fast-spreading coronavirus, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had postponed the lucrative Indian Premier League till April 15. With lack of clarity over the future of cash-rich IPL, the BCCI is reportedly planning to go all out to make sure that the tournament takes place this year.

As of now, there is no assurance of whether or not the competition would start in April. But India’s governing body, BCCI is not giving up its hopes of hosting IPL and is reportedly planning to host the tourney in July-September if there is no improvement in the situation in the coming days.

There are chances that the league might get called off.

Amid all this, one thing is pretty much certain and this is the broadcasters, sponsors and the parent board have to incur a loss.

Let’s take a look at the loss that can be faced by each one of them in three possibilities.

Possibility A: Things get better by mid-May-April

As per a report in The Times of India, if a 60-day tournament is conducted sometime then or perhaps in the first week of June, the loss will be considered as minimal.

However, it will affect the broadcasters advertising revenue for lack of enough prime-time space and mainly affect the sponsor visibility.

On the contrary, India’s governing body BCCI, IPL franchises, cricketers and match officials will not get affected.

Possibility B: A truncated Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) is held

Just in case if the truncated IPL is hosted, with the number of days and matches getting reduced, then the stakeholders and cricketers will incur massive loses.

The broadcasters sold their 90 per cent of advertising stock for this season and the BCCI’s revenue from the central pool of sponsors will also face losses.

In this scenario, the players and match officials also will get paid on a pro-rata basis.

Possibility C: A ‘force majeure’ comes into effect

In the worst-case scenario, which can witness an unpredictable event preventing the fulfilling of a contract, everybody loses.

The possibility will take the worse hit, as everyone goes home after the tourney does not take place. The chances of hosting the tournament overseas are not possible as the coronavirus pandemic has spread all across the world.
