Melbourne Stars captain David Hussey has urged Cricket Australia selectors to consider left-handed batsman Rob Quiney for the three-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka next month.

The 39-year-old Hussey said there are many players playing good cricket in domestic circuit and Quiney is among them along side Ben Dunk in the ongoing BBL season.

“Why not? I am not a selector but he is in a rich vein of form. He is probably competing with the likes of Ben Dunk at the top of the list. They are both playing very good cricket,” Hussey said.

Playing a significant role for Stars, Quiney played a cameo of 19-ball 35, which included five fours and a six against Sydney Sixers on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Quiney is the 11th highest run-scorer in this year’s BBL season with 227 runs at an average of 37.83. While coming to bat at the top of the order, Quiney has a strike-rate of 170.67.

In all six BBL seasons, the Stars have reached semi-finals every time, which shows how they have competed in the T20 championship so far.

“We have been in the semi-finals every year since the first Big Bash year, a very successful franchise but we need to go one step further, if not two steps further, to win the whole thing to complete the franchise,” Hussey added.

Australia will face Sri Lanka in the shortest format of the game as Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc and David Warner will tour India for a four-match Test series.

“I like the way they go about it, free in mind, see ball, hit the ball – no preconceived ideas in how they are going to play. Just watch the ball and smack it out of the stadium. It is really refreshing to see Bob come out in his latter ages and play very, very well,” Hussey further added.

Quiney was overlooked by CA after playing two Tests in 2012 against South Africa, where he could only manage nine runs in three innings at an average of just three.
