Perhaps the timing for Suresh Raina could not be more appropriate than today’s match against Zimbabwe. Recently, he had opined that he wants to play the role of Yuvraj Singh in Team India. And today’s scintillating performance of Raina amply justifies his caliber for ODIs.

Raina was rightfully awarded man-of-the-match today in India’s last World Cup Pool B encounter at the Eden Park on Saturday. Obviously, a jubilant Raina opined that he was glad to deliver the goods when his team needed him the most.

He said, “I knew I need to deliver when my team needed me the most, I’m glad I did that today”.

While Team India was going through a rough patch chasing 288, Raina came into bat when Indian score was meager 71 for three. But a determined and composed left-hander, Raina played it cool without panicking and fulfilled his job by scoring runs freely.

Team India had lost Virat Kohli (38) pretty soon, but fully committed Raina and Dhoni (85) made it a point to prevent any further hiccups as they put on India’s best World Cup stand in chases – 196 runs.

He added, “We lost a few wickets upfront, but as I came in I was hitting the ball (well). We played smart cricket, played lot of singles good shots and overall it was a good team efforts.”

Raina who is known for his open and blunt views, further said he owes his success to the confidence shown in him by the captain and the coaching staff. Elaborating this he said, “There was a lot talked about in the team meeting with Dhoni, Sanjay Bangar (assistant coach) and Ravi Shastri (team director) and that helped a lot.”

In fact everyone was expecting Raina to play his important role and to get his rhythm much before the crucial knock out round and Raina has shown his mettle. Hope to see many such glorious moments in the days to come.
