Darren Sammy To Lead Peshawar Zalmi In PSL 3

One of the most popular overseas cricketers in Pakistan, former West Indies skipper Darren Sammy has been retained as the captain by defending Pakistan Super League champions Peshawar Zalmi for the forthcoming season, the franchise announced on Saturday (November 11).

The all-rounder, who led West Indies to two World T20 titles in 2012 and 2016, led the Peshawar-based outfit to their maiden title last year.

“PSL champions Peshawar Zalmi announce Sammy as their Captain for the PSL 3. Captain cool Sammy guided Peshawar Zalmi to the PSL glory in PSL 2,” Peshawar Zalmi stated in a press release.

Javed Afridi, the owner of the team, also expressed his delight on the decision and credited Sammy for creating a good bond between the players which eventually led the team to the title.

“Sammy not only led the side well on (the) ground but also off the field too and that bonding between players and captain led the team to PSL title,” Afridi said.

Sammy has earned the status of a cult hero in Pakistan for the way he has defied apprehensions to give the cricket-crazy fans of the country a lot to cheer. When the likes of Kevin Pietersen and other overseas players refused to travel to Lahore to play the PSL final, Sammy did not even think twice and had become an instant crowd favourite. A couple of months ago, he had revisited Lahore, this time as a part of the World XI side.

Speaking at that time about his experience in Lahore, he had said:

“I did brief them quickly about my experience in Lahore for the PSL final. We’ve had the best security team, who have also briefed them. Like I said before, it’s important. I get to play in front of my fans in St Lucia and around the world and we see how passionate they are, and to get an opportunity after so long, they are all happy to be part of that process.

“First thing I said to guys after the PSL final – apart from all the security and the protocol – once I stepped on the field, it felt like playing in St Lucia. That is my honest experience – the crowd were just hungry for cricket, to see their icons and role models play in the game. That is what it felt like. That is what I briefed the players when the coach [Andy Flower] asked me about my experience,” he had added.
