David Warner Feels the Presence of MS Dhoni in the Team has Helped Kohli Mature as a Captain

Australian opener David Warner said that having Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the team has been a real helping hand for current Indian captain Virat Kohli which has helped him to mature both as a player and a captain.

“MS Dhoni brought a sense of calmness to his captaincy. He did a great job as captain and he is still doing a great job, nurturing Virat and that is a great thing to do for a former captain. He is nurturing Virat and that is a good thing to do for both men,” Warner told Boria Majumder of India Today.

However, Warner said that the real test of Kohli lies when he and the team will go through a lean phase as a captain and making a comeback from there will prove his mettle as a skipper of the national team.

Under Kohli’s full-time leadership in ODI’s India has won bilateral series against England, West Indies and Sri Lanka and also qualified for the final of the ICC Champions Trophy only to lose to arch-rivals Pakistan by a huge margin. He has been one of the most successful Indian captains and has already won 19 out of the 29 Tests he has captained.

“Virat has not had a lot of non-success as captain but the real challenge comes when you start losing games. The real test comes when you start losing some games. We are here for another three matches to go and hopefully we can turn that around and maybe we will see a different captain,” he said.

Meanwhile, Warner also expressed his disappointment at Australia losing the 2nd ODI at the Eden Gardens despite restricting a star-studded Indian batting line-up to just 252.

“We always talked about how if you restrict the Indian team to under 300 in their conditions, you are going a long way to winning the game. We did not get that key partnership in the middle.

“The ball was swinging and it was challenging conditions. Bhuvi and Bumrah bowled brilliantly up front. We lost two early wickets, established a partnership in the middle but did not have that one batsman going on to get a big score,” Warner said as Australia went down 0-2 in the 5 match series and needs something really special to make a comeback from here.
