Traditionally, the Indian side has been gifted with some prestigious batting talent and over the years, one has witnessed the emergence of some absolute batting legends from the Indian team. In the modern day game, one name that hovers around everyone’s minds is surely that of Virat Kohli. The Delhi dasher has conquered all conditions and oppositions with his unmatched class and excellence.
However, Kohli is not the only Indian batsman to have aced the limelight in recent years. In the shorter forms of the game, openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have had their share of tremendous success as well. The opening duo, along with Kohli at number 3, undoubtedly form the greatest batting trio in the current setup of ODI cricket.
When they get going, they can effortlessly make a mockery of any target and can shatter all records. The famed trio of Indian batting did exactly that against Australia in October 2013, when they scaled down 360 with more than 6 overs to spare. Almost three years have passed since that larger-than-life game, but the memories are still fresh in the minds of all Indian fans.
Needing a comprehensive 360 to win the 2nd ODI of the series in Jaipur, openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan set about in some fine style. Their 176 run opening stand was a delight for any aspiring batsman as the Australian bowlers were battered mercilessly. With 184 runs more needed in 23.5 overs after the fall of the first wicket, in walked Virat Kohli, to only wrap up the formalities.
Kohli batted like an absolute beast as he registered the fastest ever ODI century by an Indian in just 51 deliveries. His innings was so brutal that the Australian fielders could just admire his skills and do nothing else. But the Man of the Match was Rohit Sharma, for his sparkling unbeaten knock of 141 off just 123 deliveries. The chase by India, till date remains the second highest run chase in the history of ODI cricket.
The chase against Australia was just an instance of how blessed the men in blue were, to have such phenomenal batsmen in their top 3. In the years to come, the trio surely holds the aces for team India. Check out the video of that epic run chase below.
