The story:
Derbyshire’s Hamidullah Qadri became a subject of talks among teammates and club members for a unique reason. The Afghan-born cricketer, who bowls right off-spin, made history on the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Glamorgan as he became the first player born in the flipside of this century – the year 2000 – to play in county cricket.
“The 21st-century boy”
The 16-year-old, born on December 5th, 2000, came out to bat at No 11 under the lights and survived being bowled off a no-ball as he made an unbeaten 11. Derbyshire was bowled out for 288 in Division Two day-night fixture. His contributions were of great help though for the team as it was part of the recovery process which the last three wickets added 131 runs.
“Tom Milnes leads Derbyshire revival”
Glamorgan’s fast bowling quartet featuring – Marchant de Lange, T van de Gugten, Michael Hogan and Graham Wagg – shared all 10 wickets between them to bundle out Derbyshire for a functional total. After a poor start which saw opener Luis Reece get dismissed for just a single run in the 4th over of the innings, Derbyshire was brought on track by Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen. However, soon there was a middle order collapse as the batting side went down from 99/1 to 157/7. Luckily Tom Milnes (53) scripted an appreciable comeback for his team. The former South African fast bowler Marchant de Lange ended as the most successful bowler with figures of 3/82. His new ball partner Van der Gugten also finished with 3 wickets at the cost of 88 runs.
“Rain washed List A debut”
Qadri has played in only one List A game so far which was against South Africa A on May 29, 2017. The spinner was able to bowl only one delivery in the match after being brought into the attack in the 21st over as rains washed out the entire game which was already reduced to a 43 overs a side match.
