India’s newly appointed Test captain Virat Kohli has said that MS Dhoni’s retirement from Tests came as a shock and all the team members were taken aback by his sudden decision.

Dhoni retired from Tests after the drawn third Test against Australia at Melbourne. Currently, India are (0-2) behind in the four-match series of the Border-Gavaksar Trophy and will be playing for pride in the Sydney Test which gets underway on January 6th.

On the eve of the Sydney Test, Kohli was quoted in saying:

“We were all taken aback by his decision because it was so sudden. We had no clue. We never saw it coming, so it was pretty shocking.”

Kohli praised Dhoni’s ability to keep his head cool in pressure situations and also said that as a captain, a lot can be learned from him.

“There’s so much to learn from him, especially in tough situations: his composure, his decision-making at important times.

“These are the things which are priceless. Any captain would love to have them. I hope I can be as calm as him, but everyone has different styles,” Kohli added.

Kohli also made it clear that even as the series is lost, India will continue to play with the same aggressive intent and go for an outright win in the Sydney Test.

He said:

“It’s important for the players to know that we need to be in a positive frame of mind, a line doesn’t need to be crossed. But we are not here to back down from any sort of confrontation or any sort of battle.

“You will still see positive cricket and the same aggressive intent.”
