When It’s Safe, Domestic Season Will Be Organised: Sourav Ganguly

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has informed that India’s domestic tournaments would remain postponed until the COVID-19 situation gets back to normal. The domestic season was set to start from March but after lockdown being imposed the tournaments have been postponed.

India’s domestic season covers the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Irani Trophy and Ranji Trophy and several age-level competitions. However, the ongoing coronavirus has pushed the whole schedule.

In the recent interview, Sourav Ganguly has also said that the domestic tournaments will resume after situations get controlled in India. He opines that India is a large country and teams needed to travel from one place to another for their matches and hence domestic cricket won’t start till everything is safe.

“It is necessary, but it will happen only after coronavirus. When it is safe, only then, especially junior cricket.”

“We don’t want to expose young players. Our country is so large and our domestic cricket is so robust that everyone has to travel and play. So till the time, it is not safe, it will not happen,” clarified the BCCI boss.

Last seasons’ Irani Cup was cancelled because lockdown 1 was imposed after IPL’s postponement was announced.

On Wednesday, Sourav Ganguly also clarified that the cash-rich league will be hosted this year under any circumstances. He even said that the board would also consider venues outside India if situations don’t get normal here.

The 13th edition of IPL was scheduled from 29th March but has been postponed indefinitely. If BCCI fails to organize the tournament this year, the league might have to face INR 4000 crore loss. So, the board is looking for every option available.
