ENG vs WI 2017: Kraigg Brathwaite Signed by County Giants

Over the last few years, opener Kraigg Brathwaite has been an immense contributor for West Indies. His numbers as an opener have improved to a great extent in the last couple of years, with impressive performances in Australia, at home and in England recently.

Not to overlook the fact, Brathwaite was brilliant in UAE as well and played a key role in the victory in the third Test of the series. But it was his batting display at Leeds, however, which truly announced him on the global platform. Those two innings at Leeds were pretty much the making of Brathwaite, as a young, dynamic and a solid Test opener.

Days after his ton and knock of 95 in the second Test, where he was a rock in the side’s historic run chase of 322, Brathwaite was signed up by Yorkshire, for the remainder of the county season. For someone as talented and hardworking as him, this is a reward well deserved.

“It’s a bit of a surprise,” Braithwaite said. “Initially, coming to England, I knew there would be a lot of opportunities, and one of my goals was to score as many runs as possible. I wanted to lead the West Indies batting from the top and earn a chance to play some county cricket.”

“Before the second Test I was speaking to my agent, and he was telling me that he was talking to Yorkshire’s coaching staff. After the game, he came back to me telling me he was getting some quality feedback. They really wanted me, and I was very happy because Yorkshire is a very big club in England and I’m very happy and proud to have been selected by them,” he said.

Adding to his desire to succeed in the county arena, he said,

“Playing county cricket was always one of my goals and coming over here to play against England for the West Indies was going to get me one step closer if I did well. Many of our past players have played in England, and they always say it’s the place to develop a better technique and learn more about batting, predominantly because the ball does a lot throughout the day. Playing in England, playing county cricket will help me learn with every game, every day.”
