England Vs South Africa 2017 – Joe Root Becomes Third Youngest To Get To 5000 Test Runs

Continuing his rich vein of form in the ongoing Test series against South Africa, England skipper Joe Root was flawless yet again. On a day that was highlighted by some really disciplined South African bowling, England’s experienced trio of Alastair Cook, Joe Root and Ben Stokes stood out. With batting always a challenge at Manchester, the South African pacers were right on the money, not allowing England to get going after the hosts elected to bat first.

Cook took his time to get going after losing opening partner Keaton Jennings for yet another low score and battled out the initial onslaught of the Proteas seamers. His Essex teammate Tom Westley too got his eye in but failed to convert his start into a decent contribution.

The middle order was in for a serious collapse had skipper Joe Root not intervened. At 92-3, things looked a tad touchy for England, before the captain took the onus upon himself to rescue the innings. Playing an array of his typical strokes, Root got going and finally exhibited signs of positivity.

En route his knock of 52 on the first day, Root got past his 5000 Test career runs and became the third youngest to get to the elusive feat. At 26 years and 217 days of age, Root presently stands as the third quickest to 5000 Test career runs.

All time batting great Sachin Tendulkar stands on top of the list for the quickest to 5000 Test career runs mark, having got to the milestone at the age of 25 years and 301 days. Root is behind his former skipper Alastair Cook, who got to the milestone in 26 years and 10 days.
