It was the second day of the first test match between England Vs. Sri Lanka at the Mecca of Cricket, Lord’s. The first day witnessed a healthy crowd and the same was expected on the second day. The play resumed with England 344 for 5 with Joe Root playing at 102 and Matt Prior playing at 76.

Joe Root and  Matt prior were in great touch and were expected to make most of it in the second day and take England in a commanding  position. The play started with Shaminda  Eranga started proceedings and the first over of the second day  was a maiden. Then play continued with England playing cool and composed cricket, slowly putting runs on the board. After end of five overs of play England added extra 21 runs on board, with Root and prior hitting boundaries in between.

Sri Lanka tried things differently from the start of second day and was looking dangerous with their bowling attack. England had a steady start and both England players had to change their gloves as it was hot and was set be hotter. But in the 97th over Sri Lanka got the first success of the day as Eranga took the wicket of Matt Prior. Prior presented a easy catch to Silva, so he had to return after playing good knock of 86 in 131 balls. England was expecting a score around 500 but Sri Lankan bowlers had to restrict them from doing that. After  end of 100 overs England were 386 for 6. Matt Prior  was the third-fastest wicket keeper to reach to 4000 test runs.

In the 101th over  Jordan hit two fours in consecutive bowl but he was then dismissed by Eranga. It was a short ball from Eranga and Jordan gives a simple catch in the hands of the wicketkeeper. After that she had a short drinks break. Kulasekara came on to bowl for the first time in the second day and he was hit for three consecutive boundary by Broad. After 105th over England were 425 for 7. England was finding the boundary at regular intervals. Stuart Board was playing freely and scoring runs quickly. But in the 111th over Stuart Board was dismissed by Pradeep. Board tries to hit it but finds the fielder and Karunaratne catches it. In the 112th over  Joe root scores  his 150 and after that  play stops for lunch. Root has put England in a commanding position.

Play commenced after lunch with Root on strike and Herath on the bowling end.  After 120 overs  England were 521 for 8. Root and Plunkett were playing well and made a fifty run partnership but Plunkett was dismissed by Pradeep for 39. It was a simple catch for Silva as Plunkett miscues the shot. England were now 9 down and Anderson took the pitch. In 130.3 overs England declares with Joe root  getting to double hundred in 299 balls and England were 575 when they declared. Joe Root became the fourth-youngest Englishmen to make a double century.

Sri Lanka trailed by 575 runs, and Karunaratne and Silva took the crease. Karunaratne hit a boundary on the first bowl and after first over Sri Lanka were 6 for no loss. Stuart Board came onto ball in second over and was hit for a boundary . Sri Lanka started their innings well hitting boundaries at regular intervals.  After 10 overs  Sri Lanka were 40 for no loss. In the 13th over England got the first break through as Karunaratne was dismissed by Jordan. It was a simple catch to Prior and Sangakkara took the crease. Both the Sri Lankan players were playing well and was putting up a partnership. After 25th over Sri Lanka scored 92 for 1 with Silva scoring 38 and Sangakkara scoring 17. In the 29th over there was caught behind shout but Silva stood his ground an was adjudged not out. This two continued playing good cricket and Silva put up his fifty in the 34th over. The day ended after the 40th over, Sri Lanka were140 for 1 with Silva playing at 62 and Sangakkara on 32. Sri Lanka is up for the fight and we are in for a great test match.
