It was the third day of the 1st test between England and Sri Lanka. Day 2 ended with Sri Lanka ending the second day for 140 runs with Silva and Sangakkara on the crease. Sri Lanka at first required 376 to avoid follow on.

The game resumed from the 40th over, with Sangakkara on strike and Anderson on the bowling end. England required an early wicket  to take charge on the game. But Sangakkara hit a boundary in the first over and six runs came from the first over. Board and Anderson continued their bowling attack and hoped get the first wicket of the day. Silva and Sangakkara was well set and playing well for Sri Lanka.

After the 45th over Sri Lanka were 149 for 1 with Sangakkara playing on 40 and Silva on 63.  Board and Anderson in between bowled maidens and created pressure. In the 49th over England got the first success of the day when Anderson dismissed Silva. Anderson troubled Silva with short deliveries, before getting caught behind. Silva made a good 63 to put Sri Lanka in commanding position. Mahela Jayawardene took the crease. After 50 overs Sri Lanka were 153 for 2 and Sangakkara batting on 44 and Jayawardene still to open account. Jayawwrdene opened his account with a boundary. In the 52nd over Sangakkara made his fifty in 102 balls. Sri Lanka was steadily approaching to the total and in the first hour Sri Lanka scored 30 runs with loss of Silva.

55 overs passed with 171 on board for Sri Lanka. Plunkett is not a good selection in this type of pitch. Mahela crossed Chanderpaul on the list of highest runscorers in Tests. Two Sri Lankan batsmen were hitting boundary in regular interval.In the end of 63rd over Sri Lanka put 200 runs on board. In the middle of the game it drizzled. At the end of 65th over Sri Lanka were 207 for 2. Sangakkara was playing great cricket, hitting boundary at ease. Jayawardene was also making good progress and was taking Sri Lanka to a commanding position. At lunch Sri Lanka were 212 for 2.

Play resumed after lunch with Jayawardene on strike. Moeen Ali and Plunkett continued the bowling for England. At the end of 70 overs Sri Lanka were looking good with 226 on board and Sangakkara still on the crease. In the 78th over Sangakkara brought up his hundred with a boundary, this was 36th test hundred for Sangakkara. In the next over Jayawardene also brought up his fifty. After end of 80 overs  271 runs were on board. In the 82nd over Jayawardene was dismissed by Stuart Broad. It was a lbw decision which got Jayawardene out. Thirimanne took guard and was expected to take Sri lanka at an advanced stage. But Thirimanne could not make much difference as he was dismissed for just 2 runs by Anderson. Then came Angelo Mathews to bat and Sri Lanka wer 90 runs from avoiding follow on. In the 91st over 300 came up for Sri Lanka with Sangakkara playing very well.

Angelo Mathews was playing well hitting boundary at ease and put up his fifty in 105th over. In the 110th over a great innings from Sangakkara came to an end when he was dismissed by Moeen  Ali. Sangakkara scored a good 147 runs and then came Prasanna Jayawardene. After 116th over  Sri Lanka put 400 on board for 5 and was moving towards the total. But Jayawardene was dismissed by Plunkett for just 6 runs. Sri Lankan innings were falling apart as Jordan dismissed Kulasekara for just 9 runs. But Mathews still stayed on the crease with 79 runs and Herath was still to open the score. The day ended with Sri Lanka scoring 415 runs for 7. Still this test match can be own by any of the side, lets see what happens in the last two days.
