ToggleEoin Morgan, England’s best white-ball captain, ODIs in particular, brought curtains down on his illustrious career not just as a batter but as one of the greatest leaders. Eoin Morgan talked about the moment when he realized that time was up for him at the highest level. Since winning the 2019 World Cup, he has scored only one century which came against his native Ireland. Since September 2020, he has made just one half-century in 26 innings for England across the 50-over and T20 formats.
Eoin Morgan: Everything Must Come To An End
In a video shared by England Cricket, Morgan said, “Everything must come to an end. I have been open and honest the last three years about when this day would come. I have spoken to a lot of people that have been through this transition particularly in our sport. Each one of them to a man said that there will be a time and place that it will just hit you like a ton of bricks or the answer I got and most common was ‘You’ll know’.”
“When we were in Amsterdam, it hit me quite hard. And, I am glad that I was in a good enough space to realise what I was going through and accepting it. I was quite sad the day that it hit me but since then I have been very happy, very content, unbelievably proud not only as a player but as a captain,” he added.
Eoin Morgan Praised Vice-Captain Jos Buttler
“Jos has been in charge, he’s been an unbelievable good vice-captain while I’ve been captain, and when he’s stepped in he’s been an exceptional leader. He obviously commands himself with the bat as one of the best players in the world, but also as a leader within the group he commands tremendous respect,” he said.
Jos Buttler was dropped from the away three-Test series against the West Indies following his below-par showing during the failed Ashes campaign in Australia. But the 31-year-old made a superb comeback in white-ball cricket, emerging the highest run-getter in IPL 2022 and guiding Rajasthan Royals into the final. Jos Buttler ended the IPL 2022 season with an aggregate score of 863 runs in 17 games which included 4 tons.
