Ex-IPL Chief Lalit Modi Quits Cricket Administration

Lalit Modi, the tainted-cricket administrator and the former Indian Premier League chief, on Friday (August 12), announced his resignation as the president of the Nagaur District Cricket Association in Rajasthan.

Revealing his decision late in the night on Twitter, the 50-year-old posted a three-page letter, addressed to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri informing of his decision to leave the post and calling for the Rajasthan Cricket Association to be made “best again”.

“It has been a long journey for me in Indian cricket. The path has been rocky at times, but the destination has always been the pursuit of excellence. Needless to state that over the past 15 years, I have enjoyed every moment of my journey.

“But I feel that the time is now ripe to pass on the baton to the next generation. Thus, today I want to bid goodbye to cricket administration for now,” he wrote in his letter.

Modi, who was the IPL chief for the first three seasons of the lucrative tournament, has been accused of money laundering and is on the run from Indian authorities and is currently in exile in London. He was banned by the BCCI in 2013. He is now facing multiple cases in connection with alleged irregularities in the IPL tournament and is wanted by different investigating agencies, including ED, income tax department, CBI and Chennai Police which had first filed a FIR against him.

Earlier this year, in March, the Interpol rejected India’s appeal for a global warrant against him.

And because of him, the BCCI had banned the Rajasthan Cricket Association. But the state association can now heave a sigh of relief and will hope that the ban will be lifted. Rajasthan has not hosted a single Indian Premier League (IPL) or an international match in the last three years due to Modi’s involvement in the cricket affairs of the state.
