Fast Bowler Mohammad Abbas’ Journey From A Factory Worker To Pakistan Test Squad!

There are some stories that become talk of the town and then there are some stories that unite families either by bringing joy or pain on a plate, but for die-hard cricketers, who give their best of the years in practice to sport while yearning to don the national jersey to set their respective careers to a new high.

Similarly, we’ve one story about Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas, who has worked wielding industrial unit to earn the livelihood for the family while also having a stint at a leather factory.

“Earlier, I worked for a welding and leather factory for eight months and also worked for registering properties of the court for approximate of 2 years. I never wanted to quit cricket,” Abbas was quoted as saying by BBC Urdu.

Hailing from Punjab district’s small village Jethi in Sambrial, the pacer become the toast of his native place with the ball as he had been working hard to impress the national selectors.

The 27-year-old fast bowler Abbas, who was named in Pakistan’s 13-member squad for West Indies tour earlier this month, was working hard to live the passion of representing his country one day.

However, right-arm fast bowler’s splendid performance during the past two domestic seasons saw him impressing the chief selector Inzamam-Ul-Haq.

Abbas, who has also played for Pakistan Television, has also thought to do a job outside Pakistan as he is the eldest among his siblings.

“I am the eldest son to my parents, hence for earning I even planned to move out of the country but my friends advised me to stay, conditions will get better here,” Abass was quoted as saying by BBC Urdu.

Abbas impressed the national selection committee by bagging 132 wickets in past two first-class seasons while being the part of Sialkot in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

“I was offered to play in district 19 and my lawyer friends did not permit me but they allowed me to play the match later.” Abbas revealed.

Abbas believes hard work plays a significant role as it never gets wasted. He wanted to do well in the future while being inspired by veteran fast bowler Glenn McGrath and Mohammad Asif, who was caught in fixing scandal at Lord’s in 2010.

“It does not really matter how the cricket is, you still will have to put in efforts. While I am bowling, I steer clear of the batman’s weaknesses and strengths which make it easier for me to oust my opposition,” Abbas concluded.

Interestingly, Abbas is playing alongside Asif since past two years for Sialkot and is often receiving tips on the bowling from his senior countryman.

The first Test of the three-match series will commence from April 21 at Sabina Park as second will be held at Bridgetown on April and the final Test will be held on May 10 at Windsor Park Dominica.

Since making his first-class debut in 2009, Abbas has played 57 matches in which he has bagged 244 wickets at an average of 22.05
