Mahendra Singh Dhoni the Indian captain is often known to make bold and unusual moves and has been pretty successful too. Many of his bold decisions has changed the path of several cricketers and brought several success to Indian cricket. He brings uniqueness to captaincy which separates himself from others. Now, let’s take a look at the bold decisions took by MS Dhoni which paid off:
5. Dhoni’s decision to move up the order to no 4:
Dhoni as soon as he was made the captain of Indian Cricket team he changed the role for himself by playing as the finisher role and was immensely successful with that too. He cemented his place as one of the best finishers in the history of ODI’s. But the burden is slightly down for Dhoni as he is captaining only the ODI side and has retired from Tests. So Dhoni has chosen to play as no.4 batsman in the recent Bangladesh series. He wasn’t successful as one could expect but certainly that move is a great one in matches to come in the future.
4. Persisting with young talents:
Dhoni never backs away in helping young talents and allowing them to shine in the big stage and has changed the path of several cricketers by giving them immense confidence. The prime examples are the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin. The decision of Dhoni to persist with Kohli after series of failures in the Australian tour of 2011 paid off as he went on to make a career defining century in Adelaide which earned his spot in the Indian test side. Now he is one of the best Test batsman in the world. The Decision of moving Rohit Sharma to open in ODI’s paid dividends as he improved his average and played some stunning innings for India. Ravichandran Ashwin is Dhoni’s trumph card in any format and turns over to him in every crucial situations of the game.
3. Ishant Sharma’s spell in Champions trophy 2013:
India posted a modest total in 20 overs in a rain affected match and with Kohli playing a decent hand and when England went about their chase they got to a terrible start with Yadav removing the England captain early. Later Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara put on a good partnership and put England in a comfortable position. Later Dhoni took a brave move of bringing in Ishant Sharma who was expensive in his previous overs and he immediately made impact by picking up Morgan and Bopara in two consecutive deliveries. Later Dhoni kept things tight for England and was playing with his moves and it was Ashwin who bowled the crucial last over and took India home. In the brink of defeat Dhoni managed to change things right and later on went on to win their first Champions Trophy title.
2. Joginder Sharma’s heroics in World T20 2007:
Joginder Sharma will often be remembered for his last over against Pakistan in the finals of the world T20 where he held his nerve and bowled India to victory. Dhoni impressed one and all in his first stint as a captain by taking India to the finals of the very first World T20 event. Many thoughts would have arised on Dhoni’s mind in the final over of the finals whether to go with the experience of Harbhajan or Inexperience of Joginder. But Dhoni was bold enough to give it to the youngster Joginder Sharma and took India home and India emerged victorious.
Of all the great moves made by Dhoni this one ranks the best amongst all. Lots of pressure on India as they are playing at home and it has been 28 years since India won the world cup. India was not absolutely dominant in the group stages as they tie a game against England and lost against South Africa. But India stepped on the pedal in the knock out games and Yuvraj Singh was the real backbone of India along with Sachin Tendulkar as he performed both with the bat and ball and was Dhoni’s go to man. With everyone contributing to their potential Dhoni was due with his performance as he didn’t even scored a single half-century during the world cup and in the most important final to everyone’s surprise he replaced Yuvraj singh as no.5 batsman when India was in quite concerning position. Dhoni took to the attack of Sri Lankan bowlers and therefore took India to a comfortable position along with Gautham Gambhir and hit the winning six over the long on boundary and created moment of history. This would surely be the best moment in Dhoni’s book and surely one of the best moments in Indian Cricket History. This would certainly be one of the top bold decision he took in his career in an immense pressure situation.
