Gautam Gambhir, former Indian opener has heaped praise on Delhi Capitals opener Shikhar Dhawan, saying his record of scoring back-to-back hundreds in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 is a huge achievement.
Shikhar Dhawan, playing for Delhi Capitals, scored 101 not out against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and followed it up with an unbeaten knock of 106 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) to become the first batsman in IPL history to score two successive centuries on a trot.
Gautam Gambhir: Shikhar Dhawan’s 2 Successive Tons A Huge Achievement
Shikhar Dhawan is at the second spot in the list of leading run-scorers in the ongoing tournament, having amassed 471 runs in 11 matches averaging 58.87 with 2 fifties and 2 tons.
“First thing, the record itself is a huge achievement! No other Indian has done it. In fact, no other player has done it in the IPL. Two back to back hundreds, that too in a T20 format,” said Gambhir while speaking on Star Sports show Cricket Live.
“The more important thing about these two centuries, is the timing, the time at which they have come, when the Delhi Capitals need to peak. If your most experienced batsman peaks at this moment and is in his best form, then it’s an advantage for DC,” he added.
He had consistent performances since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 and returned to his hometown to bolster the Delhi Capitals’ batting unit in 2019. He has amassed 5050 runs in 170 matches averaging 34.82. He had scored in excess of 450 every time since 2016 and has failed comparatively only in 2009 and 2010.
Gautam Gambhir: Delhi Capitals Will Undoubtedly Reach Playoffs
The former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir further said that there’s no doubt Delhi Capitals, who have 14 points from 11 games with 7 wins, are reaching the playoffs. They will play SunRisers Hyderabad on Tuesday evening on 27th October.
Meanwhile, DC had been in fine form until the last two matches against KXIP and KKR which they lost. Although they are very close to advance in playoffs, it is more a question of finishing in the top 2 for them. Three teams are in contention for the top two spots and DC cannot afford another loss. They have 14 points from 11 matches till now and are tied with table toppers Mumbai and 3rd placed Bangalore at the moment.
Delhi Capitals are without two of their seasoned campaigners, pacer Ishant Sharma and spinner Amit Mishra, both of whom got ruled out after suffering injuries. Substitutes have been named though but they are yet to play.
