Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting feels that George Bailey is the right man to lead Australia in World Cup if their Michael Clarke doesn’t get fit in time. Ponting also backed Bailey’s captaincy credentials and said that the ODI vice-captain already has a good experience of leading the team whenever Clarke was absent in the past.

During an event in Hobart where Ponting received life membership of Cricket Tasmania, he was quoted in saying:

“I can’t see any reason whatsoever that there would be anyone other than George Bailey if Michael is not fit.

“He’s been an unbelievable player for Australia for the last few years, he’s led the team really well and he’s got some experience going into a World Cup which is what you need.”

Amid speculation that Steven Smith might get the ODI job following a great show in his first Test as a captain against India at Gabba, Ponting said that for now, he sees no other option better than his fellow Tasmanian for the captaincy.

“He’s a perfect fit for me, I don’t think there should be any argument whatsoever,” Ponting added.
