Global T20 Canada: Yuvraj Singh-led Side Delayed Match Over Unpaid Wages

One of those unprofessional things took place during the last night game between Montreal Tigers and Toronto Nationals. Both the team players protested to not play the game, as they were not cleared their wages by the respective franchise owners. It made things delay by a couple of hours. The match involves big players like Yuvraj Singh, George Baily, Moises Henriques, Dinesh Chandimal, who are among the few.

According to an ESPNcricinfo report, both sides –Toronto Nationals, led by former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and George Bailey’s Montreal Tigers — initially refused to take the bus at the scheduled departure time from the team hotel to the CAA Centre in Brampton over unpaid wages.
One of the most dangerous batsmen to have played in the shortest format, Yuvraj Singh is leading the Toronto Nationals in the second edition of the tournament. The tournament witnessed a controversy after the match between Yuvraj-led Nationals and George Bailey-led Montreal Tigers started two hours late.

Initially, they reported that the match between the duo was delayed due to technical issues. However, later, it comes to know that the players were not happy with the franchise owners, who delayed their wages.
“The game between Montreal Tigers & Toronto Nationals on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, was delayed. It was due to procedural issues between the players, the GT20 League, and the franchise owners. All the stakeholders had a meeting and addressed the concerns,” a press release said.
“Global T20 Canada management is doing their best to popularise the game in North America. As a new entity in cricket, are bound to come across certain hurdles.
“On behalf of GT20 Canada, we sincerely thank all the stakeholders, players, and support staff for their constant support and confidence in us. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our sponsors, broadcasters, and millions of fans across the globe,” the release added.
Yuvraj’s side needed to win all their remaining matches to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockouts but they were willing to sacrifice that for the sake of their wages, the report stated. However, after starting the game, they played like champions to seal it even without Yuvraj Singh in the side.

According to the ESPNcricinfo report, the protest is not limited to these two teams only. The report, quoting sources, said other squads have told team and league owners that they will refuse to play the playoff matches.
However, most probably, the owners would clear the amount in order to see the smooth finish to the tournament. The lack of efficiency in maintaining might lead to termination as well.
