What an impressive performance given by young Akshar Patel of Anand, Gujarat during the fourth ODI played on the beautiful ground of Dhramshala, H.P yesterday against West Indies, in a match that will be remembered for a sudden pullout by West Indies for the remaining matches. Anyway, the bowling figures of Akshar, read as, 10-1-26-2, that in itself narrates the talent and control displayed at the early stage of his career. MS Dhoni is known for always encouraging upcoming bowlers with potential and this particular bet of Indian captain proved very fruitful.
A jubilant Akshar Patel said “My style is to bowl quicker through the air, I don’t like to flight the ball much. I stick to my strength and don’t even think about tossing the ball. It was a flat skiddy wicket and I bowled according to the conditions.”
Imposing his confidence in captain MS Dhoni, he said “It was great to bowl with Dhoni keeping the wickets. A proud feeling as it was the first time he kept wickets on my bowling and hopefully I will get more chances.”
Sharing his earlier experience he said “There was a lot of dew on the ground but we generally practice a lot with the wet ball. It helps me a lot in the match and the same was the case here.”
He clarifies that there was no specific briefing from the captain and added that “Nothing was said from the captain. He just said to bowl to your strength. Samuels is a good batsman and was batting well. I just concentrated on not giving him a fuller length.”
On the issue of West Indians backing out from the remaining matches he opined “It is sad that there was no trophy but there is not much we could do. It was the decision of the West Indies players. I hope I get more chances to lift trophies for India.”
This is too early to make any forecast but given the commitment, skill and enthusiasm put in by Akshar Patel, we can certainly expect a lot from this young and hard working player.
