Greg Chappell Named Interim Selector of Trevor Hohns-Led Selection Panel

Greg Chappell, the former Australian cricketer, has been appointed as the interim selector of Australia cricket team in an urgency meeting called by Australian cricket board, the same night when Rod Marsh decided to relinquish his post of chairman of selectors. Trevor Hohns, who previously served in the same capacity, will replace Marsh in his role.

Following a series loss against South Africa in the second Test at Hobart, Rod decided to step down as the chief of selectors, seven months earlier than his contract expires. It has been tough last four months for Australian team as in the month of July/August, they were whitewashed by Sri Lankans in the three-Test series in the sub-continent. Following that came an ODI series defeat against South Africa and now, the same team has already pummeled them in Test series with still a match left.

The selection panel was under extreme pressure and before anyone could take a decision, Rod Marsh decided to call it a day before an action being taken by the authority.

As of now, this is only an interim committee and soon the Australia board will table a meeting to decide upon the future of the panel and team.

Trevor Hohns has previously served as a national selector from 1993 to 2006, including 10 years as chairman of the panel. Chappell too has had a taste of selection panel as the former Australian all-rounder served as the selector in the year 1984 before being re-appointed in 2010.

“It is vital that Australian cricket finds the best candidate for this role,” Trevor is highly experienced as a selector, and will ensure we place our best players on the field this summer while we seek a permanent replacement for Rod,” said David Peever, Cricket Australia Chairman.

“Greg has been instrumental in restructuring our youth pathway program, driving the National Performance Squad, the introduction of a CA XI squad in the domestic one-day cup and creating clear pathways for talented youth in Australian cricket to aspire to wear the Baggy Green. His in-depth knowledge of up-and-coming talent in the Australian system will be invaluable,” he concluded.
