Habibul Bashar Hopes For A Neck-To-Neck Contest Between India-Bangladesh

Former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar has come out in support of his team for the one-off Test against India, saying the young neighboring side would pose a tough challenge for the hosts despite their recent stupendous home form.

Remembered as one of the classical batsman from his country, Bashar was involved in Bangladesh’s inaugural Test in 2000 against India. In 17 years, this will be the first occasion when India and Bangladesh will face off in a Test in India.

Despite ranked No. 9 in ICC Tests Rankings, Bashar hopes his side produces a neck-to-neck contest with the world No. 1 side.

However, the right-handed batsman feels the passion in both countries is no less and the contest would be mouth-watering.

“The passion for cricket in Bangladesh has always been huge. The same is the case with India as well. I am hoping that is what will happen in Hyderabad as well. I think we (both the teams) should play more cricket as there is a lot of viewer interest.”

Stepping into the game without their star bowler Mustafizur Rahman, Bashar feels his absence would be a setback, but at the same time it would present an opportunity for other bowlers.

He further said the likes of Shakib-Al-Hasan and Mehedi Hasan would be crucial to Bangladesh’s chances of claiming their maiden Test win against India.

“A bowler of the caliber of Mustafizur missing out is a very big setback. We have to look after him as he is just coming out of a surgery and is the future of Bangladesh. However, there are others in our bowling line-up who will be ready to step up. We have a good spin attack in left-arm spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam, and Mehedi Hasan has done well recently.”

With the match happen to take place in Hyderabad, the wicket is expected to play slow. Bashar said Bangladesh will feel comfortable and added someone like rookie Mehedi Hasan will play a major role in stamping his authority, the way he did against England in home Test series.

“Between Bangladesh and India, the conditions and wickets are pretty much the same. Last few years, if you see, Bangladesh has played very well at home. Playing in India is like playing at home.”
