The first time a limited over match was played it had both teams playing 60 over’s and the average score in those 60 over’s was around the 250 mark. Fast forward to 2015 and the T20 format with just 20 over’s a side has seen teams score more than 200 on more than one occasion. If scoring at 10 runs an over is in itself a huge feat, we have seen teams come close or even chase down these targets.
Here is a list of matches from all the seasons with the most runs scored in a single match –
1. Chennai Super Kings v Rajasthan Royals at Chennai, Apr 3, 2010
In 2010 the Chennai Super Kings had a great outing with the most successful batting line up in the league in that year. With Matthew Hayden and an in form Murali Vijay who scored a dazzling 127 off just 56 balls with 11 sixes and 8 fours. However the match was not a walk in the park for CSK as Watson and Naman Ojha who just missed out on a century by 6 runs had other plans and got close to chasing the target of 247 set by the CSK. However they fell short by a mere 23 runs ending the highest scoring T20 match ever with 469 runs scored on the day.
2. Kings XI Punjab v Chennai Super Kings at Mohali, Apr 19, 2008
Yet another match involving the most consistent team CSK, this match was a teaser for the 08 season of the IPL with the game going for a staggering 447 runs. Csk who batted first posted a mammoth score of 240 thanks to a 54 ball 116 by Michael Hussey at the top of the order. However KIXP who started with a blazing half century from James Hopes scored 207 runs and lost the game by 33 runs
3. Delhi Daredevils v Kings XI Punjab at Delhi, Apr 23, 2011
This time the team from Delhi showed that they are not bad at scoring huge. A blitzkrieg of an innings from both the openers in Sehwag and Warner saw the Daredevils post a healthy 231 on the board. A scintillating innings from Shaun Marsh almost took away the match but when he lost his wicket at 77 there was not much that the KIX team could do. A total of 433 runs were scored in that game
4. Deccan Chargers v Rajasthan Royals at Hyderabad (Deccan), Apr 24, 2008
This match involved two teams who were at different parts of the table in the 2008 season of IPL. The Deccan Chargers who never looked like winning a match the whole season piled up a huge total of 214 runs with the help of a century by the hard hitting Andrew Symonds. This celebration did not last long as Symonds gave away more than 20 runs that were needed for victory for the Royals in the last over. With cameos from everyone in the team Royals overhauled the score and in the process completed 431 runs for the match.
5. Mumbai Indians v Royal Challengers Bangalore at Mumbai, May 10, 2015
This seasons IPL has had its own share of big target matches and this was one such match. The RCB batsmen took full advantage of a lethargic bowling attack from the MIs and with the help of a swashbuckling 133 of just 59 balls with 14 4’s and 4 huge 6’s along with a 50 ball 82 from the skipper Kohli scored a resounding 235.
