I Really Don’t Know: Bhuvneshwar Kumar Baffled By Rahul Dravid And Rohit Sharma’s Astonishing Decision

India fast-bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has commented on the team-management’s decision to promote Suryakumar Yadav as an opener in the first T20I against West Indies. The Indian team-management sprung a huge surprise by promoting Suryakumar as an opener as it continued to experiment with the top-order ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup.
Rishabh Pant was expected to open alongside Rohit Sharma as he was the opener for the last two games of the three-match series against England last month. The team-management, however, decided to tinker with the lineup once again and asked Suryakumar to open the innings. The right-handed batsman did get the start but could not convert it into a big score, departing for 24 off 16 balls.

Team India have now used as many as seven openers in T20Is this year. Apart from Rohit, Suryakumar and Pant, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda have been tried out as openers too. As of now, there is little clarity over who would be the opener in the upcoming Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup although it is highly likely that Rohit and KL Rahul might open the innings once the latter returns to the team.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Suryakumar Yadav’s promotion:
Just like the fans and experts, Bhuvneshwar Kumar seems to be surprised too with the Indian team-management’s decision to promote Suryakumar as an opener. The fast-bowler could not point out the reason when asked about India’s decision of opening with Suryakumar in the series opener. Bhuvneshwar stated that he has little idea about the thought process behind the decision.
“What was the thought process behind sending Suryakumar Yadav to open especially when the team had opened with Pant and Hooda previously,” was the question put forward to Bhuvneshwar in the pre-match virtual press conference ahead of the second T20I.

In reply, he said: “I really don’t know. Itna pata hai ki zaroor kuch thought process raha hoga (All I know that there must have been some thought process behind it). It surely wasn’t random. I’m sure whatever the coach and captain want to achieve something out of this. Honestly, I don’t know what exactly was the thought process behind it but I’m sure there must’ve been some deep thinking.”
