Nov 2, 2023 at 3:35 PM
Pakistan stunned the cricket world by crushing the defending champions, and arch-rivals India in the Champions Trophy final this Sunday by a margin of 180 runs.
After losing against the same side in the group stage, Pakistan made a dream comeback in the later stages of the tournament, much similar to their 1992 world cup triumph. After losing the toss and put into bat first, Pakistan got off to a dream start with openers adding 128 in just 23 overs.
Fakhar Zaman was out caught behind the wickets early on in the innings but the replay showed Bumrah overstepping, much to the delight of Pakistan fans. He used the opportunity brilliantly and played the innings of his life. With cameos from Babar & Malik Pakistan scored 338.
Later, Mohammed Amir ran through the top order claiming the wickets of India’s top three. At one stage India were 72/6 but a cameo from Hardik Pandya got them past 150 and a terrible mix up with Jadeja saw him walk off dejected and what followed was a mere formality. India was all out for 158 which meant Pakistan winning their first ever Champions Trophy.
Here we look at players ratings:-
- Shikhar Dhawan: – (2/5).
Shikhar Dhawan had his worst day in the Champions Trophy unfortunately on the day of the big final. He was watching Amir send his opening partner for a duck and his skipper for just five, from the other end. He tried to counter-attack and played some delightful shots but could only manage 21 off 22. This is his lowest score in Champions Trophy.
- Rohit Sharma: – (0.5/5).
Rohit Sharma walked out to bat with a mountain to climb and succumbed to pressure in the very first over. He couldn’t trouble the scorers. India had a lot of hope on their openers but they failed to deliver. This was a body blow for India and they were never in the game since that wicket.
- Virat Kohli: – (0.5/5).
Virat’s awful day started with the toss itself. After winning the toss he chose to bowl first on a belter which proved to be a terrible decision. He was poor with his bowling changes and field setting as well. And as the day went on it became bad to worse, as he failed with the bat as well. He got out the very next ball after being dropped by Azhar Ali at the 1st slip. He scored only five off 9 balls he faced.
- Yuvraj Singh: – (1.5/5).
Yuvraj Singh was peppered with some short pitch stuff by Pakistani fast bowlers. He didn’t look in control when the fast bowlers were operating but he played some shots as soon as spin was introduced. But that only for a short span, as Shadab Khan trapped him LBW for 22.
- MS Dhoni: – (0.5/5).
One of the many Indian batsmen who had a horrible day, Dhoni was just another addition in that list. Dhoni looked awful with the bat and could manage only four out of the 16 balls he faced. He had a decent day with the gloves though.
- Kedar Jadhav:- (1/5)
Kedar Jadhav had a poor outing with the bat. He didn’t get a chance to bat much in the tournament and when he did it was in the final and he couldn’t do much. He chipped in with a wicket with the ball though. He scored nine off 13 balls and with the ball his figures read 3-0-27-1.
- Hardik Pandya:- (4/5).
Hardik was India’s 2nd best bowler and the best batsman by far in the match. First with the ball he bowled tight when spinners were leaking runs and ended up with decent figures of 10-0-53-1. And with the bat, he entertained one and all with his knock of 76 off 43 before getting run out because of a terrible mix up with Jadeja.
- Ravindra Jadeja:- (0.5/5).
After having one of the best days of his life in the Final of 2013 edition, in the final of this edition, Jadeja had one of his worst. First, with the ball, he was smacked to all corners of the ground by Fakhar Zaman. He conceded 67 in just eight overs. With the bat, he was involved in the run out of Hardik Pandya and could only manage 15 off 26.
- R. Ashwin: – (0.5/5)
Ravichandran Ashwin continued to have a poor day with the ball in ODI’s. He recorded the worst figures in a Champions Trophy final, as he went for 70 off his quota of 10 overs without picking up a wicket.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar:- (3.5/5).
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the best of the Indian bowlers by a long distance. He kept things tight in the powerplay and also bowled brilliantly at the death. He ended up with excellent figures of 10-2-44-1. But he did fail to pick wickets with the new ball which hurt India real bad in the middle overs.
- Jasprit Bumrah:- (0.5/5).
Bumrah did the same mistake again. He picked up the wicket of Fakhar Zaman early on in the innings but the replay showed he overstepped. He bowled two more no-balls after that. He needs to work on this. He bowled mediocre at the death and ended up with figures of 9-0-68-0.
