ICC May Consider Test Status For Afghanistan And Ireland

With Afghanistan making big strides in international cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly contemplating the idea of giving Test status to its associate member.

The apex body is also considering giving Test status to Ireland. With the ICC keen on bringing major changes both on and off the field, the proposal of including new teams in Test format will be an important issue in ICC’s meeting starting on February 2 in Dubai. And if proposals are approved, then there will be two new Test playing countries. That is in addition to the existing 10. Afghanistan and Ireland are the front runners to bag the Test status among the associate nations but Netherlands and Scotland are also believed to be in the race.

Meanwhile, introduction of two new teams in Test format can also lead to another logical proposal – the two tier Test system. According to the system, the teams will be divided into two divisions. The top seven teams will be in division one while the division two will consist the bottom five sides, with each team playing a series either home or away against the others in their divisions over a two-year cycle. The winner of the league, promotion and relegation will be decided by the ranking. However, the idea was previously dropped by the ICC after the BCCI vehemently opposed the proposal.

With the BCCI in a state of confusion under new interim administrators, the ICC can finally go ahead with the plan that they had abandoned six months ago. Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting to see the BCCI’s approach if the ICC decides to implement the system. Moreover, if the new financial model is approved, the BCCI can lose somewhere between Rs 1500-1800 crore. Newly-appointed BCCI administrator Vikram Limaye will accompany acting BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhury and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry in the ICC meeting.
