The Joe Root-led side thrashed the Proteas by 177 runs at the Old Trafford and won a Test series against the Proteas for the first time at home since 1998 when Alec Stewart had led the Three Lions to a 2-1 series victory in the five-match series.
The massive win helped England gain six points to move from 99 to 105 points and raising the stakes for this year’s Ashes. England will take on West Indies in a three-match Test series, their last Test assignment before the Ashes.
On the other hand, South Africa have retained their second place in the rankings but have lost seven points to slide to 110 points.
Australia, who will hosts the Ashes this year and will look to regain the urn, is fourth with 100 points and will continue to hold that place until at least later this month when they tour Bangladesh for a two-Test series.
Meanwhile, India is at the top of the list and will continue to lead irrespective of the result in the last Test of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli & Co. are leading the three-match series 2-0 and will lose just a solitary point if Sri Lanka manages to pull off a win at Pallekele. However, the in-form Indian team can gain two more points if it continues its winning streak and inflicts a whitewash on the struggling hosts.
