ICC World Cup 2015: Match 2, AUS v ENG, Finch, Maxwell propel Australia to 342

Sidharth Gulati / 14 February 2015

Swashbuckling opener Aaron Finch and middle-order batsman Glenn Maxwell stole the show till the mid-innings in the match two of the ICC World Cup 2015 as Australia propelled to a mammoth total of 342 against England at Melbourne. Finch hit his first hundred (135) of the ICC World Cup 2015 after being given a lifeline by Chris Woakes on the score of zero and Maxwell  played a quick-fire knock of 66.

After being put into bat, Australia got off to a great start as their openers David Warner and Finch scored 57 runs in the first 7 overs before Warner lost his wicket to seamer Stuart Broad. Shane Watson, who came into the World Cup with not much runs under his belt, got out on a duck to become Broad’s second victim. Chris Woakes then carried the good work of Broad as he got out Steven Smith early, leaving Australia reeling at 70/3. Finch then got a great support from skipper George Bailey and the duo put on 146 runs for the fourth wicket and the former also brought his 6th ODI hundred.

With Bailey and Finch then falling in quick succession, Maxwell combined with Mitchell Marsh and Brad Haddin for some late blitz and took the team to a match-winning score. Steven Finn took the first hat-trick of ICC World Cup 2015 on the last three balls of his spell. His victims were Haddin, Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson.

Brief Scores: Australia 342/9 (Finch 135, Maxwell 66, Finn 5-71) vs England
