ICC World Cup 2019: Shankar Basu Confirms Update on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Injury Shortly
India team’s strength and conditioning coach Shankar Basu has confirmed that the update on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s current fitness will be known shortly. The leading Indian pacer suffered a hamstring injury while bowling against Pakistan.
He was ruled out for the rest of the game after bowling only 2.4 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was in fine form in the ongoing world cup. Although, he is not entirely ruled out of world cup, he will be sidelined for a considerable amount of time.
The 29-year old had managed 5 wickets in this world cup. He is a crucial bowler for India both in the opening spell and at the death. The injury came at the wrong time as Bhuvneshwar was just getting better in this world cup. He took three wickets against Australia in the game before Pakistan.
“Our physiotherapists are looking after Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the moment and we will know the status very shortly,” Basu said in a press conference.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the spear head of Indian bowling lineup. His place is indispensable but Indian team needs to manage without him for the next few games. On the other hand, Indian skipper Virat Kohli already revealed that Bhuvi could miss from two to three games.
“Slight niggle for Bhuvi, he slipped on one of the footmarks. He’s out for two, maybe three games, but he should come back for us at some stage during this tournament,” Kohli said during the post-match ceremony.
Meanwhile, India cricket team lost Shikhar Dhawan for the rest of the world cup.
Rishabh Pant had already joined the team a week earlier. He will be integrated into the squad for the game against Afghanistan this weekend. Dhawan played a crucial role in the first two games against South Africa and Australia. But his absence is a big blow to Indian team especially in the knockout games.
However, India have KL Rahul, who showed incredible temperament against Pakistan on Sunday. He will need to continue his performances for the rest of the tournament.
“Dhawan has a fracture at the base of his first metacarpal on his left hand. Based on several specialist opinions, he will remain in a cast till mid-July, which rules him out of the World Cup. We have requested ICC to allow Rishabh Pant to be as a replacement,” team manager Subramaniam said.
On the other hand, Mohammad Shami will be pace partner for Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming games. Despite Bhuvi’s absence, India will still have a plethora of options in their bowling lineup. For the time being, Virat Kohli and team can manage Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s absence.
